Well, I'm running out of ideas.

But what condition does the workstation think it's in - does it still
think it's in a workgroup or in the domain?

You could try running some of sysinternals tools like filemon and
regmon to get a handle on what the process is actually doing.

Other than that, my only other suggestion would be to simply join the
machine to the domain manually using the native XP Networking wizard in
My Computer > Properties > Computer Name.
