Not so weird that it hasn't been tried before. It is simply more resources
that could be used to institute a more reliable back up program.

For instance, your current state is going to be so out of date in three
weeks that you would not really want to go back. However, if you had
weekly(or more frequent) backups, Chances are that you would be able to go
back to useful info. Using a mirror to backup is cumbersome and is the type
of thing that sits on a shelf and goes stale. The USB image is good as long
as it leaves the premise at night to a safe location. The idea though is to
have backup on distinct pieces of backup media so they can be scheduled in a
manner that reflects the businesses acceptable loss of information. In
short, backups should be frequent on several pieces of media to allow
choices and give options if you discover problems a couple of days after
they occur.
