Like Kevin, I don't have any issues with changing tapes or strong passwords
at any site - and I have some small sites. I have an SBS2000 site with only
3 PCs and they never miss a backup - and these are highly technical people.
For me, the difference has always been selling the idea. If I demand this
is the way it is going to be done, there will always be resistance. If I
lay out the arguments in such a way where the decision maker comes to the
conclusion that 'we need tapes changed daily and stored off-site' and 'we
need strong passwords changed regularly' - then you're good to go -
especially if you take the time to explain and present the same arguments to
the end users - and they see the value in the process. That is another
reason why we include training with every install - not only to help the
users use the features & functionality they have, but to also have the
opportunity to instill best practices and explain why they're best
practices. Virtually any client can and will accept & embrace backup
rotations and security best practices if you invest time and effort in
helping them understand why these things are important. We don't want our
users to be helpless and have to call us for everything - we want them to
learn about the system they invested in, to understand how to get the most
out of it and how to protect it. None of us can unilaterally declare 'this
is what you are going to do' - because it won't happen that way.
It's simply a matter of communicating with the client that these practices
are in their best interest. Our experience has been that doing so not only
leads to the customer embracing these practices, but results in a stronger
relationship between us and the client.
