Their are lots of consultants on this site that will help you for less than
$600 a month. Be sure that you know what you are getting though because you
cannot expect an outsourcer to protect you against all evils. You still have
to make good business decisions. In other words don't expect your outsourcer
to protect you from data failure if you don't buy a backup device and use it
or virus if you don't have AV. Also be sure that you do the backups if you
take on that responsibility. Your outsourcing company cannot limit their
fees and if you get into these situations it can be expensive. You have to
know when you say no to something that is recommended you are taking on a
risk. Be sure you understand that risk.
TechSoEasy is right when he says that you have better things to do. You can
save money by doing your own administration but you can't make money. You
are not in business to save money. You are business to make money. As a
small business owner, no one is making more money for your company then you.
To limit your productivity by taking on low value jobs hurts your company.
As you have said you have been working with SBS misconfigured since January.
That is five months of wasted productivity for a configuration that would
have cost you 2-3 thousand. SBS is a great productivity enhancing tool and
properly configured and used it saves an organization between
$250-700/users/month. So you have probably lost 10K in lost prodictivity be
trying to do it yourself. That is not figuring your lost time.
You are not the only one in this boat, we have all made descisons like this.
I tried fixing my dishwasher... it became a noise maker... and then a
junker... all to save $150 service call.... 6 hours of my time and a $700
dishwasher later... I have been a firm believer in outsourcing ever since.
Even as a consultant that deals with SBS on a daily basis I agree with Les
that you cannot know everything and I agree with you that this user group is
useful to us all. I echo your thanks to the group.

to your company. There is no doubt that the technology provided for the
price is absolutely a value... as long as everything runs smoothly and you
can spend your time running your business instead of running your server.

your network. I know that the "o" word can be frightening for small
businesses, but to put in perspective, it's like outsourcing your lawn
mowing... you've got better things to do (and if you're not ready to
completely give up your night IT job, don't worry... there's lots you can do
with Sharepoint and Office that might even make some money for you).

$600 per month for someone to maintain the network in a proactive manner.
Other than having to not worry as much about your system, the greatest
advantage of outsourcing is that the tech is working on at least 6 or 7
networks during the course of their week... they know about the common
errors, and they can share useful tips/tricks with you. Ideally, they could
also provide a monthly 1-hour training seminar for your staff. Just make
sure that you get a couple references, and that the tech has specific
experience with SBS2003.

post on here) have been terrific... but what many people don't realize is
that a server requires regular maintenance, just like your lawn (or in my
case, just like my patch of weeds in the patio). The regular maintenance is
accomplished much more efficiently by someone who does it every day.
