Never seen anything like that. Wonder if there's any commonality in the
mail server software on the remote ends (eg all using some duff old
version of sendmail), or some other common factor.

Well, duh. ISPs are generally about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

So, fundamentally if your IP wasn't changing very often, it sounds more
like a straight-forward connectivity problem. On which assumption, I'd
be looking for common factors - were you using the same network
equipment throughout?
