Hi Geoff,
By default, ISA uses port 8080 for web requests (proxy). (That's why you put
8080 and <servername> in your browser.) When Trend needs updates, it needs
to know that, so you enter the proxy (<servername or ip> and port 8080). You
enter a domain account because otherwise ISA doesn't know who is requesting
internet access and denies it.
Without this information, trend will try and use the default http port 80,
which won't get to the internet. Without ISA, there is not http proxy, so
you don't put any proxy info in and the default port 80 works.
Communication between Officescan clients and server is done on some other
port, a high number randomly selected during installation. You generally
don't need to worry about this, when the clients go to the Officescan server
and run setup, they get this info. About the only time it causes problems,
is if you uninstall/re-install Officescan server prior to uninstalling the
officescan clients. Then communication between the two is broken.
Communication with the Officescan Configuration web (what you use to
configure it) is yet another port. If it's installed into the default VW
site, then that's port 80. If it's installed into some other VW site, then
you have to assign a port number to that web site, that's where you may
elect to use 8085 (or some other unused port number).
So there are 3 communication channels needed.
a) The Trend apps that reside on the server <> internet (for updates).
b) Lan client/server communications for status, updates, etc.
c) Using the Officescan web configuration.
I hope my explanation doesn't confuse you further :-(. Most of this is
fairly painless and transparent in practice.
