We understand your predictament, and want you to successfully recover from
this situation. At the same time, you need to be aware that doing ANY update
to a system involves some risks - which is why it is extremely important
that you take precautioanry steps when applying patches.
With SBS, I do the following:
1. First, I make sure I have a recent backup.
2. Then I reboot the server BEFORE installing any patches, just so I know
that the server does boot up correctly.
3. Then I usually shutdown Exchange / IIS
4. Then I install patches. As others have pointed out, I ONLY install
critical patches thru Windows update. I never install the additional
recommended patches nor the drivers.
5. I then reboot the server
