Thanks, Terry, for the information. As you have suggested,
this will be a very messy situation. My main goal was to
implement the SBS2003 domain while maintaining the Win2K
domain long enough to move files, users, configure the
companyweb, etc. to/for SBS2003. As I have a hardware
firewall, which also administers forced virus protection
on the network, I was trying to use the firewall as the
gateway for SBS2003 also at the same time as the Win2K
during this transition (to keep the antivirus update
working and remove the necessity of using another router
to connect the two subnets). That was the reason for being
on the same subnet.
It looks like I will need to rethink the move: 1) Put the
SBS2003 on its own subnet 2) Use the SBS2003 DHCP server
and DNS (as currently configured, DHCP comes from the
firewall DHCP server; DNS comes from SBS2003) 3) Point the
SBS2003 to the Internet router (one of the Nics (a two Nic
install) in the SBS2003 is on the DMZ of the firewall) 4)
Use a router to allow traffic between the two subnets to
get files, etc. transferred.
I will make this a "clean" install with SBS2003 to make
sure all remnants of the old config are gone.
If you have any other observations, I would appreciate
your comments. Thanks again for your help!
Best regards,
Mark
