I use my laptop as a desktop replacement as well.
When you reconnect to the network, the "newer" version stored locally should
overwrite the "older" server version - at least it does for me.
Does your ISP require you to be on their IP network to retrieve POP3 email?
If not, it shouldn't matter if he's on the SBS network or not.
I would really look at getting the VPN to work. It wasn't that much
trouble, and it sure simplifies things. With broadband connections the
slowdown isn't all that bad.
