I am in the exact same boat for an inplace upgrade.
Maddening to say the least. Has anyone had any luck
working around this?

letting you know we're in it together. Since you've done
some inplace upgrades, can you tell me: do ineed to have
iislockdown installed before upgrading?

the fifth or sixth time (dating back to B2) that I have
done in place upgrades of SBS2k to SBS03, this is the
only time I REALLY had some serious problems.

512MB, 18GB, etc. Hardware is scheduled for replacement
in 9-12 months ... but we gotta keep this puppy running
until then!! No hardware related issues at all.

skipped a couple of upgrades ... the Intranet and
Exchange. Not noticing this at the time, Setup appeared
to have completed properly, and asked me for permission
for the final re-boot. Did so. Upon startup, it asked
to run Windows Update ... we did and I received two
failures to install properly -- WM9 (ok) and KB832880
(the Intranet update). Hmm. Then I ran the ICECW, and
found no options at all for Exchange and email. Hmm.
Went back to the integrated setup and had a close
look ... sure enough Intranet had no check marks on it as
being installed and neither did Exchange. Looking closer
at the drop downs, I saw the Intranet had the option of
UPGRADE as did Exchange, so I made those selections and
restarted the process. About 30-40% through the Exchange
installation/upgrade ... I received the following error
box:

Setup appeared to continue to process normally. But, all
of the key Exchange players (Store, etc.) are set to
Manual and are stopped. Configuring e-mail does not
appear as an option in the Internet Wizard.

OK. But, when I manually re-ran KB832880 the install
fails right after it says it is installing file
SQMSTOUP.DLL (I think I copied the file name correctly).

I am guess that we have an issue with the original
WindowsUpdate installed version being only somewhat
properly installed, I have chosen the chicken's way out
and hit OK. By the way, //Companyweb does NOT work ...
permission denied, so it appears that the fix is NOT
installed.

install, there are several third party dental related
apps running on this server that I do not want to have to
mess with right now (bad software and bad tech support!!)
so in-place upgrade is the only real choice. I must do
everything possible to AVOID a rebuild from square one as
dealing with re-installing this crappy dental software is
just too much for me right now!! However, I do discount
these apps from having any influence at all on these
issues as they ran perfectly before the SBS03 upgrade
started.

component. Need some suggestions to make sure I get
everything, but I actually think that will be fairly easy.

simply REMOVE then REINSTALL the Exchange Component
(using integrated setup)?

Exchange data and the loss of what they have or the loss
of Exchange capability for a day or two is not a huge
issue although they will probably not be happy. So,
obviously, this is not the long term solution!! Other
piece of good news is that in its current state, the
underlying Server 2003 seems to be running well and the
Dental apps are functioning properly so at least they can
get the important parts of their work done tomorrow
morning (Monday)!
