There are some valid reasons why one might want to use
the POP connector instead of SMTP.
Personally, I want to keep my internal network as low
profile as possible. I do that by hosting all web sites
and email externally. And by using the POP connector I
don't expose my internal network directly to the outside
world. I like that. It also allows me to use cheap DSL
services without static IPs if I choose.
It would seem the Microsoft folks could create a routine
to check every 5 minutes, perhaps, and if the previous
check hadn't completed yet it could skip that one. I'd
hate to think this option is a "legacy" option that is
going to go away soon.
