Solved it and you will never guess where!

Folder redirection is active on this server. Offline synchronisation is also
used on other shared folders. There was a need to relocate the user and data
directories to another drive.

One of the shares was not recreated on the new drive. However the users
workstations were still looking for it.

When they could not find it, the little system tray icon came up saying the
server was not available and folders were now working offline. That is fine
and dandy EXCEPT the operating system then assumes that the server is not
there and won't browse it! And because the server is the browse master, you
can't browse anything else on the network either.

Recreating the share immediately solved the problem. The workstations that
worked prior to the disappearance of the share were not synchronising it
offline.

It looks like the synchronisation software is capable of telling the
operating system something that is not true: IE the network isn't there even
though it is.

Do Microsoft have anything to say about this behaviour? I could not find any
reference anywhere to this exact problem.
