The folder is containing almost 3,500 sub-folders. All Windows XP sp3
clients
have their "view" settings to "list". All clients have their firewall
disabled, no antivirus since clients cannot access the Internet.

One thing I found out since my original post is when I simply change the
letter of the network drive, the "hourglass problem" disappears! I hope
someone can explain this to me...

My DNS settings are correct, I can assure you.

Define "large" here. Are you talking about 100 folders or 10,000?

Also, are they viewing the folders with just name, size, type and
modification? Or are they also viewing other detail columns?

It sounds like there may be other networking issues (AD, DNS) but it
could
also be a filesystem content issue.

I've seen in one case where Microsoft support suggested to one client, that
in a scenario where this may occur, to make sure the mapped drive letter
used on the client side, is not the same letter as on the server side. Not
sure why this would cause a problem, but I thought to mention it.

Also, if there is a USB or some other type of removeable drive on the
server, and there are problems with the drive or drivers, it can cause a
long delay while the machine tries to enumerate the contents.

But having 3500 folders, is pretty large. I usually try to sub-divide them
into child folders based on function or department, and then share out the
child folders appropriately, so there are less for the system to enumerate.
