Even though it seems unlikely, there's the possibility that the duplex
setting is set to something that is causing the problem. For example if the
ports on the 3Com switches were set to Full Duplex and it was set to Half
Duplex on the PC's NIC, you would see the problem you're experiencing. You
could either check the setting on the 3Com switches, put a mini-switch in
there or... try a different NIC. Or.... like Newell said... leave work and
go get a stiff drink.

John,
We have a stack of (3 total) 3com - 1100 switches in this closet
that feed that room.. I have tried different ports in each of them
with no luck. the most recent switch that I tried have 15 pc's
plugged in with no issues. It definietly seems to be a switching
issue, I just dont see any thing wrong with the config on the
switch. They have not had any issues in years plus that fact that
other pc's are connected. along with this pc working in our
shop... scratching my head on this one!
