Hi John,
I was faced with this chalange a little over a year ago. The best software
to use is a tool called PuTTY. Here is the official website for it. Please
note dispight the odd URL this is in fact the official site.

The other tool that I use is something called Xming. It is a native
X-server for Windows. This lets you run graphical Linux apps seamlessly on
your Windows desktop. It is designed to work with PuTTY.
Here is the link for Xming.

I hate installing non-native "junk" on my Windows machine but Xming is
nothing like that. It is an X-server for Windows done right. I can't
recommend it enough. You use PuTTY to SSH into your Linux box and type the
name of a graphical app and it opens on your Windows desktop. I use the
graphical YAST to administer my SUSE boxes all the time.
With PuTTY and Xming you should be set!
