Do not run 2 DHCP servers together, that will create conflicts for the client. Under DNS management console is the server listed under Forward lookup zone, if yes with how many entries and which ones?

The IP is fresh. In fact, I changed out my test workstation and ran
through the whole IP config routines just to make sure there was
nothing wrong with the box I was using for the test. The new one can
still not get on the internet. The workstaion I'm on is using the
router as DHCP server. If I disable the DCHP in the router, nothing
gets on.
Please clarify the settings I should use for my nic on the server.
Currently showing for IP : 192.168.1.2 ; 255.255.255.0; 192.168.1.1
For DNS: 192.168.1.2 all others are blank. On the workstaion, it's
set for automatic all the way.

If the workstation ip is expired, the lease time is exceeded, delete
the ip on the DHCP server "address leases" and run ipconfig /renew on
the workstation.
The forwarders ip is only used form the DNS server, all domain
members will ask the domain DNS server for the www.whatever.com
address, if the server doesn't know it, it will automatically forward
ther request to the ip addresses under the forwarders tab. So you
will not see the addresses anywhere else.

I think we're gaining some ground, but still not working right yet.
When I do a "ipconfig /all" on the client, it is now showing the
router's IP address as it should, but I still can't get to the
internet on the client.
I've noticed a couple of things in the server that may or may not be
significant:
1. There is a blue exclamation mark "!" showing by IPv4 under the
DHCP
Server
2. Although the forwarders are set as you described earlier, I
don't
see
them listed anywhere unless I right click on the server name.

Hello Meinolf,
When the old server crashed, it required a new motherboard and
CPU. NT-4 and it wouldn't co-exist, so it was done as a clean
install by a tech support guy as I felt it was over my head.
I don't see us ever growing past what we have now (about 30
clients).
We don't run anything on the server by way of application. I
have
our
intranet posted there and quite a few shared folders so
different
people can
get access to the same things.

When it was NT4, did you upgrade or create a total new
server? Unfortunal single label domain names should be
avoided. Will not be a problem in your small network i hope,
but if you think to grow you have to change it to
royalnet.local or similar, do not use a real ending like .com
or .net domain internal. Exchange 2007 for example will not
run with single label domain names.
Again, please post the scope options from your DHCP server.

Correct, only "royalnet" for a name. Our previous domain
under NT-4 was a single word, so I changed it slightly so as
not to confuse the new from the old security hashes.

OK, here's where we stand.
I've extended the scope to five IPs (227-232)
No exclusion area listed even after refresh, so I
skipped
that
part.
209..... DNS listings removed from the server as well as
the
client.
Forwarders were already set. Must have been picked up
from
the
router.
I did the ipconfig series (all, release, renew, all) on
the
client. Even rebooted the client.
Still no internet.
NOTE: I did not kill the DHCP service on the router as
the
rest of the company is still logged in.

Please clarify the following points:
remove the dns 209............... Is this from the
server nic, the client, or both?
"setup a forwarder" Please explain.On the server open the DNS management console, go to
Start, Run and type "dnsmgmt.msc" without the quotes.
In the console add the server if not displayed. If you
see the servername, mark it, rightclick and choose
properties. On the opened window choose the FORWARDERS
tab and here fill in the 209.x.x.x addresses, doesn't
matter which order. If the options are greyed out, open
the + and go to the Forward lookup zones, here you can
see a "." zone (root zone, only used from DNS root
servers), rightclick the "." and delete it. Then close
the DNS management console and open it again. Now you
can add the addresses to the FORWARDERS tab, it will
not longer be greyed out.
Where do I exclude the unused IPs?Open the DHCP console, choose your created scope and
open the +. Here you can see Exclusions, scope options,
leases. Rightclick Exclusions and choose add exclusion
range or similar, on the popped up window you can
either specify a range or a single ip address.
I could probably stumble around
and find it, but it's easier to ask and prove I'm
stupid
as
opposed
to
locking everyone out and having them tell me.

leased from the client, exclude the other ones.
As said before remove the 209.253.113.10 and
209.253.113.18
from
the
DNS
configuration on the NIC's and setup a forwarder as

test client when no one else was in the office so
other logins were avoided.

Hello RR2,
Did you authorize the DHCP server and activate the
scope? If the DHCP scope options are setup
correctly with domain internal DNS server and
default gateway, the router ip from the LAN run
ipconfig /renew on a client or reboot it. It should
get the correc tsettings from the DHCP server.
Additional you have to configure the DNS server
from the DC, which normally will be installed
during promotion of the first DC, with a forwarder
ip address. This ip is the DNS server from your ISP
and has to be set on the server properties in the
DNS management console under the forwarders tab. On
all machines in the domain you have to use only the
LAN internal DNS server no external/public ip
address.

That would be my desire, but I'm haveing problems
there too. I tried changing to the server for DHCP
service, but couldn't get to the internet. For
some reason, the DHCP server on the domain server
isn't passing the default gateway to the clients.
Since our previous server (before the crash) was
setup with the router serving DHCP, I left it that
way from the beginning. The old server was an NT-4
server and all worked well.

way
around
and
disable it, install the server as DHCP server and
also
use
DNS

We've recently installed Windows Server 2008 and
are now experiencing some problems with
application hangups.
The server is a domain server with a few shared
files and folders. No applications are installed
on the server.
Periodically, someone updating one of the shared
files from a client PC will cause a lockup. The
event viewer on the client PC shows Application
Hang. There are no events showing on the server
for the time of the "incident". All shares on
the
server lock at that time and the only way out is
to reboot the server.
Additional information that may or may not be
related. Our router is acting as DHCP server for
the entire LAN. The DHCP server on the domain
server is disabled through services and
unauthorized.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing the
lockups?
