Antivirus and opportunistic locking?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296264
Try uninstalling the AV and disable the oplocks..

Sorry - it's a W2k3 share - and it happens only with Excel files.....
"Paul MacFarlane" <pmacfarlane@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:eOfeRnRiIHA.3940@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxLately we've been experiencing a problem with excel files on network drives.
When you open them they say "already opened by (yourself)" and you are
forced to open them read-only....
These files do a SQL query on startup.
I am certain they are not already in use. I've restarted the servers and
workstations.
Any ideas? Suggestions?
