Re: Trying to set up Domain instead of workgroup

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Thanks, Danny. I am aware of how to add the computers to the domain, I
guess
I'm concerned with assigning roles, security settings, etc. Any
tips/suggestions?

Not aware of any roles that can be assigned to a workstation. For Security
you should look into group policy. You assign group policies to an OU. Then
you move computers/users into that OU to have the group policies applied to
those computers/users. I would suggest not setting up your OU and group
Policy structure until you have a firm grasp of what it can do and how you
want to use it. You might not want/need to use separate OUs. You might want
to create a OU to put your laptop users in and set security policies based
on the fact that these computers will be leaving the office and may get
lost/stolen, where as the desktop computers *probably* wouldn't need the
same security GPO.

The link you provided may prove helpful in migrating user profiles.

You add the servers and workstations to the domain by manually going into

to do this from the server/workstation.

Oh...and can I pull over my existing user profiles as are on the other
servers somehow?

See if this helps:

I have about 20 users all networked through a workgroup, but would
like
to
implement a domain instead. I've set up Active Directory on a Win2003
server,
and have successfully added a test workstation and user to the domain.
I
can
see my domain from the test workstation, and can see the workstation
from
the
server.

Now what? How do I go about migrating the other servers and
workstations
in
the most seamless manner?
