Unable to log on to w2k server

We have an environment where w2k3 is the domain controller. Another server w2k that is part of the domain. We are running active directory also at the domain controller. We have 2 more w2k3 servers running under Workgroup connected to the network as database and transaction servers.

All connected PCs or servers have their own IP address.

Recently we came across problems where users are able to log on to the network but are not able to access directories in the w2k server. They are prompted for their User ID and Password.

At times user can't even log on to the domain. Even when you use the administrator ID to log on.

Initially, we thought it was insufficient user licenses but after adding more user licenses, the problem still persists.

We suspect damage to the active directory database or DNS server.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
