TonyR <TonyR@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> stated, which I commented on below:
Can anyone tell me why this happens:
After a fresh install of Win 2000 I can ping my external mail server.
After I install Service Pack 4 I cannot, but my XP workstations still
can.
Ultimately I want to install Exchange 2000 on it but pointless
because I can't see the external mail server. I tried a telnet to it
and that fails too, but works from a workstation.
The DNS works fine (I let the AD wizard install it and then added a
forwarder to the router). I can browse fine from the router. When I
ping an internal host it resolves and replies. When I ping an
external host it resolves to the correct IP but times out.
I've tried the same from a fresh install of 2003 R2 server - same
results.
The DNS client on the server points to itself. The DNS clients on
the XP workstations point to the server and they work fine.
I don't really care about the ICMP protocol blocking but stopping my
SMTP as well seems a bit mean.
SP4 and 2003 issues with resolution usually points to either your internal
AD DNS domain name is a single label name. With 2003 it may point to an
EDNS0 issue. But difficutl to tell with the info provided. An ipconfig /all
of the server can help us a little here.
Is there a firewall installed, or was there one, such as ZA, and was
uinstalled?
Also I'm not sure what you mean by installing Exchange, but pointless
because you can't see the external mail server. The two really don't have
anything to do with each other unless you are using an external SMTP server,
such as SMTP on IIS, or sendmail, or numerous others, as a relay point
sending mail in or out, unless it's a FE server. Maybe you can elaborate on
that a bit?
Any errors in the event viewer?
