RE: Backup Utility cannot access mapped drives

I too am having this problem.

Have just installed a brand new copy of Server 2003 R2, and have mapped a
number of drives which can all be accessed when in Windows Explorer.

When I run NT Backup I get "Access Denied" errors.

I tried the exact same Drive mappings on an XP Pro Workstation and can
access with Mapped Drives perfectly in both Explorer and NTBackup.

I am currently using the NTBackup on the XP Machine to backup to the 2003
Server.

If this is working perfectly fine on an XP Client and not on a 2003 Server
(with the same user account (by the way)) then this must be a security issue
with the 2003 Server through either a Local Policy setting or through a fault
with the NTBackup Utility included with 2003 Server.

I actually copied the NTBackup.exe from XP to the 2003 Server and tried
that... but had exactly the same problem.

Please let me know what I need to do to turn on "Unrestricted Access" in the
NTBackup utility on a 2003 Server.

Thanks, Dave

Hi Rob,

Thanks for posting.

For your issue, my suggestions are:

1. Make sure the shared resource is still available. Please click the
mapped drive to access it to test.
2. Please temporarily give everyone permission to read&write on server
side. Both Security permission and share permission to see if the problem
still occurs.
3. Create a new user profile to have a test.
4. Perform a clean boot. Follow the steps as below:
To boot into Clean Boot environment:

1) Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box, and then click OK.
2) In the Startup tab, click the "Disable All" button.
3) In the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" checkbox,
and then click the "Disable All" button.
4) Click OK and restart your computer.

5. Please map the same folder on another machine and try to use NTbackup to
see if the problem still occurs.

Thanks.

I am having problems getting backups of my mapped drives on Windows 2003
servers.

I can open the mapped drives through "my computer" and I can copy and
save
files to them.

However, when I try to select one of the drives using the Windows backup
utility I get this error message:

"The network share "X:" could not be reached. Please make sure the path
still exists and your network connection is functioning correctly."
