That is pretty much what I would expect. That sort of thing usually
works using Netbios names and the computer browser service, which rely on
LAN broadcasts. The VPN client is not on the LAN so the machines on the LAN
don't know about it. (Broadcasts usually don't cross routers or WAN links).

If you have WINS running, setting up the VPN client as a WINS client
might do it for you.

can not find the workstation.

desktop to it using the IP address but can not find it to connect to

I have also tried adding the printer using the add new printer wizard
