If you want to browse, you need to a) install WINS and b) enable NetBIOS
over TCP/IP. The WINS server will minimize the chattiness of NetBIOS you'd
otherwise have. If you don't care about browsing, you don't need either.
I have been using WINS since NT4 and have never had any real problems with
it, for what it's worth.
