we do have WINS, but it's only for legacy computers, enabling it made no
difference.
the computer browser service is turned on, on more than one computer in the
subnet, none of my other servers or workstations have this problem
netbios over tcp/ip is enabled
there is no firewall software in place and the windows firewall is not
turned on
i had a look at that article, it mostly seemed to be about problems joining
a domain, in particular an older domain. our domain is windows 2003 and the
machine is already successfully joined to the domain and was working.
you can still do start-run and put in \\machine name to browse to or from
it, or do net view \\machine_name at the prompt, but it just doesn't appear
in the list of machines on the domain when browsing from my network places
