Small Win 2003 network

Good day all.
I'm trying to set up a small network around the house but have failed so
far.
I have Windows 2003 standard installed. When I try to setup the domain
controller it warns me that the tcp/ip configuration on the network card is
not properly setup. As yet the machine is not connected to a hub, I'm under
the impression that I don't need to do that yet, firstly I wanted to prep
the machine.
After the failed installation of the domain controller is cancelled, DHCP is
setup with an active scope etc. I adjust the tcp/ip settings for the network
card to match the scope but still the domain controller setup fails.
Does anybody have an idiots blow by blow guide to setting up the server. Max
computers in the network about 5. That's all my liciense is for. I've looked
at the microsoft info on the web and it just blows me away!
Cheers,
John.
