I can successfully ping the printer, will post the routing table when I get
to the other office.

it could be the routing issue. can you ping the printer's IP? Or post the
result of routing table here.

Hi,

I've just setup a new Windows 2003 Server with SP1 installed. It has
one HP
Color LaserJet 2840 network printer connected to the network. The
server
has 2 network cards installed, one which connects to the ISP and the
other
for the private network.

The problem I've got is that from the laptop when trying to install the
printer software it says it can't find the device on the network, it
provides an option to specify the MAC or IP address, I've tried both and
both fail. The laptop has XP Service Pack 2 installed with the firewall
disabled. I can ping the printer fine and print to it, but the printer
installation software just cannot see the printer to allow the
installation
of the scanning / faxing / coping software. I think it must be a port
that
is not open on the server that is causing the software to fail, but I
can't
find out what port the HP printer software might need open. The other
problem is that the W2003 box is using NAT I think and I'm not familar
with
it, it gave me a choice when installing it to choose either Private or
Public and I think I choose Private. Everything else works fine on the
network.

Can anyone give me some things I can try, I'm running out of ideas.

Thanks
Tristan
