Bug found in Windows XP Service Pack II - Network connections icons disappear after security updates

After a windows XP computer updates to Service Pack II, all network
connections icons in "Network and Dial-up Connections" folder disappear. In
addition, windows "Distributed Component Configuration" service crashes.
This prevents the local system's future IP address updates. This
missing-icon problem happens to "ALL" windows XP service pack II computers
at our different offices.
After extensive tests, I found out the problem is indigenous to our domain:
I built a Window XP computer with service pack II installed. Then installed
all kinds of software such as MacAfee Anti-virus, Cisco VPN, etc. The
problem didn't arise until right after I installed Service Pack II's
security updates KB890175 and KB890830. I performed a System Restore.
Doing this didn't help in solving the problem. I then went to Windows
Device Manager and uninstalled the network cards drivers, reboot the
computer and reinstall the NICs. Unfortunately, the problem still remained.
After various troubleshooting I finally gave up and decided to disjoin the
computer from company domain and see what would happen. After the computer
was disjoined from the domain, I uninstalled the NICs, restarted the
computer and reinstall the NIC drivers. It turned out this time the problem
was fixed. I reinstalled all security updates, THEN rejoin the computer to
our domain and ensured the problem didn't come back again. Using this
method I was able to recover two test computers (one workstation and the
other one a laptop) that had the same symptoms.
I believe this is a bug and I am going to contact Microsoft and open a case
so they will give us advice whether this problem is related to our domain
settings or it is a bug. Firewall conflicts could also be a cause.
