Our network:
Windows 2003 PDC running DNS, AD, File Server services and clients
running windows XP. Some clients use private IP (192.168.X.X) and some
use Public IP (12.X.X.X) address.
The PDC is a DELL poweredge 2650 with 4 NICs teamed and using a
private IP address like 192.168.0.X
We have a router and behind the router a firewall appliance connected
to a switch. All the computers and server can see each other, DNS
works fine, all the computers have access to the internet.
Yesterday we lost internet in all the clients and the client with
public IP could not reach the server, only the client with private IP
could access the server.
After few hours trying to fix the problem, we realized that the
default gateway in the PDC was blank, so we changed it to the firewall
IP and then everything started coming back to normal.
Checking the event viewer i found many warning Events prior to the
problem

Event ID: 2012 - Source: Srv

While transmitting or receiving data, the server encountered a network
error. Occassional errors are expected, but large amounts of these
indicate a possible error in your network configuration. The error
status code is contained within the returned data (formatted as Words)
and may point you towards the problem.

So here are my questions:

is it possible that the default gateway got cleared out by a network
error ?
If not, assuming that the default gateway was blank,
how do server work fine for months without a problem? internet and PDC
for all clients

If someone can help me figure this out i'd really i appreciate it

Thanks
