Nmap on the linux side, superscan 2.06 on the windows side, tons of
utilities that will scan a subnet and give you a list of all the IP's
currently in use. Only draw back is all the pc's must be on and connected.
Some like Nmap and Superscan also allow to scan each IP for open ports.
When looking to see used IP's I tell nmap or superscan to only ping not do a
port scan.
