Good Afternoon,

I was wondering if someone could please assist me with a WINS Issue.
I have three sites with the following repesective networks: 172.17.x,x,
172.16.x.x, 172.18.x.x within our school district. One WINS Server resides
on 172.17.x.x. We have set up three T1 routers, one at each site. IP helper
addresses have been set up and DHCP is working fine issuing leases. Each
DHCP scope receives an Option 44, NBNS 172.17.0.x. and Option 46, Node Type
0x8 . I also believe the router's NetBIOS ports are being blocked. Presently
all servers such as our WINS, DHCP, DNS etc., are located on the 172.17.x.x
network and the other 2 sites only house computers and printers. I was told
by a third party consultant to disable the computer browser service(Group
Policy) on domain controllers, workstations and servers because it would
cause much network traffic. Could this be causing an issue?
I only see computers on each local subnet, but can not see other
computers through the router using network neighborhood. I typically use
NetBIOS functionality for certain applications that require it. I would
appreciate it if you could propose a solution without having to set up a
WINS Server at each location. We are trying to consolidate all the servers
to one central location. Thanks for your time it is greatly appreciated.

Note: We have 2000 and 2003 Servers, Windows 2000 PRO and XP Pro clients
environment. No down-level clients.

Regards,

Dave Leonardi
