:: To ping by host name from a different domain you will have to add
:: abc.def.com to the domain search list in addition to the local
:: domain. (DNS tab) Default is to append Primary DNS suffix, to ping
:: both domains by hostname only you have to add both names to the
:: list. This can slow DNS resolution considerably because it will

: Instead of being able to ping all machines across domains (which would
: apparently have detrimental side-effects on our network), what if I
: want to be able to resolve certain machines (e.g. key servers) across
: domains. For example, is it possible to have all machines in DOMAIN1
: able to resolve SERVER1 in DOMAIN 2? I realize it is possible if I
: had a hosts entry to all machines in DOMAIN1, but I don't consider
: this a viable option. Is it possible to tell the DNS server in
: DOMAIN1 about this "special entry"?

: Thanks again Kevin,

Windows server 2003 allows for conditional forwarding add the other domain
to each DNS as a conditional forwarder.
If you want to ping by hostname without adding the domain to the search list
you'll need a host file for it.
