Re: Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2003 AD Migration

Hello Ashenafi,

With ADMT you typically do the same thinng. You migrate the users & groups
first..now at this point the ADMT DB has complete account information which
is in your source domain. Now when you start migrating the computers with
the right resource processing options enabled (profiles etc) ADMT will use
the account information (migrated accounts) in the DB and fix the profiles,
so that when the user now logs in to the new target domain, they will still
have the same profiles, permissions etc..

You can refer ADMT v3 Migration Guide available on
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6f86937b-533a-466d-a8e8-aff85ad3d212&displaylang=en
for a detailed step-by-step guidelines.

Some additional information from a previous post...thought might be
informative for you:
=========================================================
When migrating, It is recommended to perform the migration in the following
order:

Domain Global Group
Domain Local Group
User Account
Computer Account

Also, please migrate the groups and users separately (do not migrate the
associated group members when migrating the groups).

To do so, during the group migration, please use the following
configurations

[Group Options]
Copy group members Not Checked
Fix membership of group Checked

During the user migration, please use the following configurations:

[User Options]
Migrate associated user groups Not Checked
Fix users'' group memberships Checked

Additionally, when migrating universal group to Windows server 2003, please
refer to the below article to avoid membership loss.

You cannot view a user's universal group membership in Windows Server 2003
Active Directory Users and Computers when universal groups do not reside in
the local domain

Btw, you can rename users when you are actually migrating them, you dont
have to do this as a two-step process. You could use an input file for doing
this. Refer ADMT User Guide.

Venkat

Hello guys,

My company has just merged with another company which is using windows
2003 active directory and we are trying migrate from NT 4 domain to
Windows 2003 Active Directory. I am the responsible person to make this
happen. So far we created trust relationships between the two domains,
made some tests and everything seems ok except that it will be very time
consuming when the actual migration starts because we have thousnads of
users.
To make this clear what I have been doing during the test is:

- Migrate user account
- Migrate Group account
- Migrate Computer account
- Perform security translation
- Rename the user account to the new naming convention on the windows
2003 AD domain
- Modify user properties in English because it was not in english in
the NT doamin

My questions is
Is their an easy way like creating the users first in the ACtive
Directory and then associate them to the NT user account profiles during
migration or any other simpler way

Thank you for your help
