Hello 6stemD,.
What fails? You wrote nothing about errors.
Did you also run adprep /domainprep?
Is the new machine DNS and Global catalog server?
Are the clients reconfigured for the new DNS server?
Did you check for mangled attributes according to this? http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314649
On both DC's run dcdiag /v, netdiag /v and repadmin /showrepl to check for
errors.
If everything looks ok and you have no errors also no errors in the event
viewer, you have to transfer the 5 FSMO roles to the 2003 machine and if
not done, make it Global catalog server.
How to view and transfer FSMO roles in Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324801
How to create or move a global catalog in Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000,
or Small Business Server 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=313994
After that run again dcdiag /v, netdiag /v and repadmin /showrepl to check
for errors.
Demoting
- reconfigure your clients/servers that they not longer point to the old
DC/DNS server on the NIC
- to be sure that everything runs fine, disconnect the old DC from the network
and check with clients and servers the connectivity, logon and also with
one client a restart to see that everything is ok
- then run dcpromo to demote the old DC, if it works fine the machine will
move from the DC's OU to the computers container, where you can delete it
by hand. Can be that you got an error during demoting at the beginning, then
uncheck the Global catalog on that DC and try again
- check the DNS management console, that all entries from the machine are
disappeared or delete them by hand if the machine is off the network for ever

Hi guys
I need help after migrating my w2k domain.
So i have migrated my w2k server with exchange 2000 to a new server
with win
2003 R2.
in my w2k i use ADPREP and FORESTPREP. after this operation i migrate
the
FSMO roles.
Now in my new server 2 roles are missing :
IMPORTANT : in the w2k3, no exchange will be reinstalled.
-This server is the Primary domain controller for the domain -This
computer is running the W32 Time Service
My question is :
How can I promote the w2k3 server to Primary DC and definitively
shutdown
the w2k one ?
Does the second roles I mentionned is really important ?
Otherwise, everythings run well
