error creating trust from NT domain to AD domain

I am trying to create a two way trust between an NT4 domain and a 2003 AD
domain server.
I can get it to work from AD to NT4 but when I try to create the trust on
the NT box, I get 'domain controller cannot be located'.
I can ping by name and IP from NT domain to new AD domain and vice versa so
I guess that rules out wins problem and the need for Lhosts file or does it
?
