Dear Steve,
Thanks for posting here.
After viewing this issue, I understand you have purchased one new server
and installed OS and Active Directory with the same domain name. What's
more, you have configured the same user account name and share folders
according to the old server. Your concern is if it will affect any SIDs
conflict or if there is some way making this more smooth? Firstly, it's
strongly recommended to use an additional server as BDC to backup your
current DC. If it couldn't allow in your situation, please refer to the
following.
Analysis and Suggestions:
=================
As you suspected, it will cause the SIDs conflict. In fact, the user
accounts on the new server is totally different from the old server's due
to the different SIDs, even though they have the same name. Based on this
situation, the permissions of share folders on the new server have to be
manually reassigned with these new user accounts. However, this process
would be tolerant for the small domain environment.
Alternatively, if the old server can work normally, you can add this new
server as additional DC by choosing "additional DC" option in the AD step
wizard. To do so, the new server will automatically replicate the AD data
to ensure the data identity of these two server. And then, we can use
"dcpromo" to demote the old DC. By doing this, we can avoid to manually
reconfigure user accounts and folder permission. I also list an article
here for your reference:
How to promote and demote domain controllers in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/238369
Please note the easy "copy and paste" method to move folders and files
between two server will lose the folder and files' Share and NTFS
permission. To consolidate the NTFS and Share permissions, we should use
FSMT tool. You can download this tool from here:

For more details about this tool, please refer to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/upgrading/nt4/tooldocs/msfsc.mspx
During the DC server transfer process, we also need to consider the DNS
transfer. About how to transfer DNS, please refer to :
How to Install and Configure Microsoft DNS Server
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/172953
I hope this helps. If anything is unclear, please feel free to let me know.
Have a nice day!
Sincerely
Morgan Che

--->Hi,
--->I have W2K SP4 functioning as a PDC and a simple file server in a
single
--->server environment.
--->the hardware if failing and i have purchased new server hardware with
no OS.
--->i have done a fresh OS install and loaded sp 4 rollout update and all
other
--->windows updates as of today jan 5 08. I have installed active directory
and
--->chosen the stand alone server option. I have change the name of the
server
--->but retained the domain name. i only have three clients in this domain
so
--->this should be fairly simple. i have created the same user names and
shares
--->on the new server. my plan is to move over all data via an external
hardrive.
--->load that data to its proper places. then hopefully with minor
modifications
--->turn off the old server and turn on the new serer.
--->
--->my concern is the thre windows xp pro sp2 clients. will i have to
recreate
--->each client due to an SID conflict? of will this go smoothly?
