Hi John,

From your description, you only want to perform a in-place upgrade to AD.
I hope following article can help you:

Upgrading Windows NT 4.0 Domains to Windows Server 2003 Active Directory

Regarding the Exchagne 5.5, we can either upgrade it or move mailbox to
Exchange 2000.

Method1. Perform an inplace upgrade to Exchange 2000. Normally, this method
would be the most simple way. For the detailed info about how to do so,
please refer to the following KB article:

Method2. Migrate to Exchange 2000 server on a new machine. To do so, please
refer to the following process:
1. Install Windows 2000 on the new machine and join into the original
domain.
2. Prepare Exchange 5.5 for migration. Note: you may need to run
NTDSNoMatch utility on this step. More info here:

3. Install Microsoft Exchange ADC on the new matchine provided by Exchange
2000 CD and create two-way connection agreements. More info here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296260
4. Install Exchange 2000 server into the same Site as the existing Exchange
5.5 server.
5. Migration of Mailboxes and Public Folders
6. Move all other resources and the remove the last Exchange 5.5 server
from the site. More info here:

We currently have a WinNT Domain, with 4 Domain Controllers, 1 PDC and 3
BDC. We are also running Exchange 5.5. It has been 3 yrs we have been
trying to get management to have someone come in to upgrade us. We have
our
licenses for Exchange 2000 and Win2K Active Directory. So I am at the
point
where I am going to do this myself. What are the steps I need to do.
Most
of our desktops are either Win2K or WinXP already. We have a few other
domains(NT) with trusts to our domain.

Are the steps I need to take, I think? Make another clean NT Server as a
BDC, patch it up, then promote that to my PDC. Then throw in a Win2K cd
and
upgrade it. This will put me in Mixed Mode and have Active Directory
running
along side NT with the BDC's, correct? Will Exchange 5.5 still work? Can
I
install Exchange 2000 on another Server and move my mailboxes to it? with
5.5 still running? Once I get Active Directory installed and running in
mixed mode, am I at the point where I just need to move my User Accounts,
is
there anything else, I appreciate any help!!
