RE: W2K with network shares -> W2K3 R2 with DFS

Hi,

---What is the implication of transfering the roles ? No, just go ahead.
That's necessary.

---Should I do that before I change my DHCP configuration so that the
primary DNS server of the clients points to the new server ? Or after ?
You can do it just before you demote the Windows 2000 DC.

Thanks.

Hello group !

I am planning a quite complicated migration here.
I have a single DC running Win2000 server (fully patched, already
adprep'd to 2003 R2).

I have a brand new box that I installed with Win2K3 R2. It will
completely replace the old server. The old server will be removed
from the network. (a second box will be installed to backup the
new Win2K3 server)
I promoted the new server to be a PDC. Everything looks good.

Now I am trying to flawlessly shut down the old Win2k box.

I have set up DHCP on both servers. I have splitted the scopes
(one half for each server), so I believe the new server will serve
IP addresses OK without my changing anything.

I have set up DNS as AD integrated, so I believe this should be OK
also.

I have set up DFS with folders pointing to all the shares of the
old server. This should be OK, because my users only acces them
through mapped network drives. I just have to change the pathes in
my connection script so that they point to the new DFS location.
(I hope so...)

Now, I would like to transfer the roles to the new W2K3 server,
but I am not sure that everything is fine.
What is the implication of transfering the roles ?
Should I do that before I change my DHCP configuration so that the
primary DNS server of the clients points to the new server ? Or
after ?

Also, before shutting down the old server, I will have to add
Folder Targets in DFS to the new server. If I have two targets
with the same content for a folder, what does happen ?

Thanks for your advices on all this !
