RE: Migrate AD from Win2k server to Windows 2003 server

Thanks for your quick response. To clarify and summarize please respond to
the following four points:

1. I do not have to upgrade our existing Win2k DC to Windows 2003 Server.

2. However, I must prepare our existing Win2k domain for the addition of
a Windows Server 2003 domain controller as described in KB Q325379.

3. After successful promotion of the Windows 2003 server to a DC I will
transfer FSMO roles as described in KB's Q324801 and Q255690.

4. I will then demote our existing Win2k DC and remove from the network
entirely.

Please respond to each point above so that I am perfectly clear on the
procedure.

Thanks for all your help!

Hi,

You can just simply add the Windows Server 2003 into the domain and promote
it to DC.

Then, transfer FSMO and demote the old DC.

I'm in the planning stage of migrating from a single DC (Win2k server) to
a
new Windows 2003 server. The existing Win2k DC will eventually be
retired
and perhaps be put to another use. My main concern is that I don't want
to
have to reconfigure the client PC's for a different domain name (ie
backup
all existing profile data, join to a different domain name and then copy
the
"old domain name" profile data to the new profile).

Is there a quick way to migrate the existing Win2k AD to the new Windows
2003 server and keep the same domain name so I don't have to recreate
user
profiles (these are not roaming profiles) on the network client PC's?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!!
