Re: NT4 SP issues

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I am planning a migration to Win 2003 for our existing NT4 domain. I am
going the route of installing a temp NT server as BDC, making it the
PDC and upgrading it, then adding a second Win 2003 DC and removing the
NT4 current domain controllers, then wiping the initial 2003 DC and
reinstalling it fresh.

Our current NT PDC/BDC both have NT4 Service Pack 4. SP5 or higher is
required to do an upgrade to 2003.

1) If I build the new temp PDC/upgrade server with SP6a, will it play
nice with the existing SP4 PDC/BDC so I can successfully sync the temp
server and make it the PDC?

2) Once the temp server is upgraded to 2003 can it have SP4 BDC's
while still in mixed mode?

Hi,

1) It is OK.

2) Yes, in mix mode, you can have NT4 BDC.

Thanks.

Thanks. I knew SP3 and earlier had a different user database format,
so could not be mixed in with other NT4 domain controllers that were
SP4 and newer, but I wasn't sure about SP6a and SP4 DC's mixed in the
same domain
