RE: InPlace NT4 to W2k3 migration with a pre-configured AD domain

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hello,

Thanks for posting!

No, you need to start a new one but cannot join to a existing domain if you
upgrade a PDC.

When you upgrade a Windows NT Server 4.0 PDC to Windows 2000 Server, the
computer automatically starts the Active Directory Installation Wizard
after the final restart of the operating system installation and begins the
promotions process. This step can upgrade the Windows NT PDC and BDC so
that they have Windows 2000 Server directory service and Kerberos
authentication service. Also, the upgrade process can convert the SAM
database in Windows NT to the Ntds.dit database that is used by Active
Directory so that the user account, groups, and security settings are
maintained. When you upgrade a BDC that is going to be a child domain, a
Kerberos transitive trust can automatically build from the parent domain
that the BDC can join.

Hope the information helps.

| Hello!
| I have the following scenario:
|
| - One NT4 domain (domain-NT) with 1 PDC and 2 BDC's and several
File&Print
| servers;
| - One W2k3 AD domain (domain-AD) with 5 DC's;
|
| The domain-AD was created and configured to receive migrated objects
(users,
| computers, groups, etc) from domain-NT. The domain-AD already exists
because
| other sites was migrated and are using this new AD domain. Now I need to
| choose the better migration path for my site. I was thinking to do the
| following (resuming):
|
| - Upgrate the domain-NT PDC to W2K3;
| - Run AD instalation and choose the option to join to an existing domain;
| - Join to domain-AD;
| - Migrate (or reinstall) the domain-NT BDC's and File&Print servers;
| - Execute pós-migration steps.
|
| My question is: Is that posible to migrate the PDC and JOIN to the
| domain-AD, instead of create a new domain? All information that I found
about
| migration paths states that it's posible to create a new child domain or
a
| new domain in the forest. But I didn't found anything about joining to an
| existing AD domain.
|
| Thanks!
