RE: In-place Upgrade & Join as a Child Domain

Hello,

Thanks for posting!

Question 1:
Because I can only create a new domain named location1.companyname.com,
will this allow me to connect to the other site as a member of
companyname.com
domain?? If not, how can this be accomplished???

No, this will not allow to connect to the other site as a member of
companyname.com domain. You may create a new Windows 2003 server and join
it as a child domain controller. Then you can use ADMT migrate the AD
objects from location1.com to location1.companyname.com.

Question 2:
In order to set up the Exchange 2003 replication, do I have to be a child
domain of the root/parent domain or can a VPN or tunnel be created to
support
replication?

This appears to be an Exchange related issue. I would like to suggest you
open in the microsoft.public.exchange.general newsgroup. That newsgroup is

| I am in the process of upgrading a NT domain to 2003 AD domain. I am also
| migrating from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003 and need to set up
replication
| with another Exchange 2003 server over a WAN connection. Currently, our
| domain name is location1.com and we are planning to join as a child
domain
| and become location1.companyname.com during the in-place upgrade of the
NT
| PDC.
|
| During the in-place upgrade, when I am installing Active Directory it
seems
| that the only working option is to â??Create a New Domain in a New
Forest.â?? If
| I try and choose either of the other options such as â??create a new
child
| domain in a existing domain treeâ?? or â??create a new domain tree in an
existing
| domain forest,â?? the process fails because the parent domain obviously
cannot
| be contacted. Therefore, I am only able to â??create a new domain in a
new
| forest.â??
|
| Question 1:
| Because I can only create a new domain named location1.companyname.com,
will
| this allow me to connect to the other site as a member of companyname.com
| domain?? If not, how can this be accomplished???
|
| Question 2:
| In order to set up the Exchange 2003 replication, do I have to be a child
| domain of the root/parent domain or can a VPN or tunnel be created to
support
| replication?
|
| Any tips or ideas on how this would best be accomplished would be greatly
| appreciated!!!! THANK YOU
