Re: W2k < W2k3 replacement

Dear Daniel,

Thanks for your response! Sorry for the delay and troublesome.

I would like to provide you with the general information below:

1. Install Windows 2K3 on a new machine.(You can assign a different static
IP address and change the IP address later)
2 Make this machine an member server (The computer name is different from
the Win2K DC) to the existing Windows 2K domain.
3. Run dcpromo and make it a domain controller for the existing domain.
4. Plan your DNS. Will it be on the new DC or another machine.
5. Move all FSMO rolls to the new domain controller. (You may refer to the
following article)
6. More a Global Catalog to Windows 2003.(You may refer to the following
article)
7. Run dcpromo to demote the existing Windows 2K DC.

More information for you reference:

| Thanks Jason,
|
| I hadn't seen these documents or the rename tool. I guess I was to stuck
| on the Upgrade and Migration names to search for Rename. Silly me.
|
| The Docs are somewhat helpful, but I still have most of the questions I
| asked to begin with. I have yet to see a MS Doc that tells me how to
| replace a server in a SINGLE AD server environment. The docs you pointed
| me to mention it, but then go straight into EVERY server needs to be
| running W2k3.
|
| So this is what I think I'm going to have to:
|
| Install Windows 2003 with a temporary name
| 1. What would I set the IP at first? (this was never addressed)
| Install AD - joining to the existing Domain
| dcpromo on Windows 2003 server
| Transfer all 5 FSMO roles (schema, name, infr, pdc, rid) + GC
| 1. Does dcpromo do these things for me? If not, how?
| 2. The pat answer (listed above) doesn't tell anyone HOW to do that.
| dcpromo on the Windows 2000 server to Demote/Remove it from AD.
| 1. Does dcpromo on the Windows 2003 server do this for me?
| Change the Functional Level of AD to W2k3 Native on the new server.
| rendom the Windows 2003 server to the original server name.
| The docs seem to suggest I will have DNS changes to make after all this.
|
| It seems like a great deal of work for something that should be simple.
| I've been a Netware guy for 6 years now and Novell has had a migration
| tool, that whole time, that can completely replace an existing server with
| a new one. When the migration software ends it actually turns the
original
| server off and the new server takes it's place with the same name and IP
| address!
|
| I have been quite bummed that MS didn't have a similar tool. I mean
really
| now, how many people here don't want or need to replace an older server
| with a new one when the specs just don't cut it anymore?
|
| If anyone from Microsoft is listening, you really need to look into this
| area for serious improvement. Servers will always need to be replaced and
| many of us don't want to change server names and IP addresses just cause
| you don't have a good migration/upgrade path or tool. You will never get
| me to change my predominately Netware network to a Windows based network
| unless this is dealt with. This should be easy and painless, but you've
| made it so difficult that it is literally the main topic of discussion on
| this newsgroup. People take the time to read previous posts and still
have
| to ask the same questions. That's just not right. It is wasting our time
| and the time of the people answering these questions.
