RE: Migrating Win 2000 Server to Win 2003 Server

Hello,

Thanks for posting!

Please see the answer below:

| If doesn't use this method, or install the new win2003 as new domain name
| then using the ADMT tools to migrate the user account from win2000 server,
| but the client computer must join new domain again. then all client
computer
| profile will lose, this mean must re-config all client computer in the
| network, is this right?

No, you do not need to recofig all clients computer in the network. When
migrating computer accounts, ADMT will migrate local profile of clients.

An example is to show you how to migrate local user profiles.

NOTE: The user account is user1, the client XP is called ClientXP. The
Windows 2000 domain is called Domain, the destination is called Win2k3Dom.

IMPORTANT:

Before the migration:
1. Add 2K Domain Admin to Win2k3Dom Domain admins group and Win2k3Dom
built-in administrators.

2. Add Win2k3Dom Domain admins group to 2K Domain admins group and built-in
administrators group.

3. Assume the account TEST is the 2K domain account, add TEST to 2K
built-in administrators group and 2K Domain admins group. Therefore, TEST
account will have the full control permission to 2K domain every clients
and the DC, it also has the permission on Win2k3Dom DC.

4. Use TEST to logon to the Win2k3Dom DC to perform ADMT migration.

Migration:

Use user1 to logon to 2K domain, you will find the profile is located to
c:\documents and settings\user1.domain

1. Logon to the win2k3dom DC and run ADMT to migrate user account user1.

2. Migrate computer account ClientXP. During the migration, tick User
profile on Translate objects screen.

3. Choose Replace mode.

4. Follow the wizard to migrate the computer account. It will despatch an
agent to restart the client computers which will rejoin the clients into
Windows 2k3 domain.

5. Go to XP client, log on to the win2k3dom. You will find the user profile
is still using c:\documents and settings\user1.domain.

We recommend using Replace mode.

Local profiles are translated in replace mode because if you perform the
profile translation in add mode, software installation by means of software
deployment Group Policies might not work.

User profile migration, please refer to the following link:

Hope the information helps.
