The only way to "upgrade" NT 4.0 to Win 2k3 is to upgrade the PDC first.

You can "migrate" from NT 4.0 to Win 2k3 by setting up the Win 2k3 domain
"side by side" on the same wire and use ADMT to migrate users from the NT
domain to the AD domain.

Each has it's pros and cons. For example if you need to keep the same domain
name, you probably wont want to "migrate". It requires you create a trust
between the two domain and you can't create a trust between two domains with
the same name. You would need to work out renaming the NT 4.0 domain before
the migration or use a temporary name on the AD domain and use the rename
tool to rename the AD domain once the NT domain is removed.

You should research each way to see which is best for your situation. This
can prevent you from getting into a situation were you have to format to
recover from.
