Thank you for posting here.

I totally agree with Danny's opinion that you also may install Windows NT
on a new box and join the domain, set it to BDC. Then promote the BDC to
PDC.Now the old PDC would demote to BDC. Perform an in-place upgrade on new
PDC to Windows 2003. Now you retain the the same NetBios name as before.
