Hi Thomas,
Thanks for posting!
As you mentioned, you are migrating multi master mixed mode windows 2000
and nt4 account domains to windows 2003. I am wondering the meaning of
"mixed mode". Do you indicate that the Windows 2000 is running at mixed
mode Domain function level? However, based on my understanding, currently
you have a Win 2k3 forest root domain with several Win 2k child domains.
Additionally, you have Win NT 4.0 domains which have trust relationship
with Win 2k3 Domain. From my point of view, there has some conflict from
the "mix mode" which has been indicated previously. If I am off-base,
please feel free to let me know.
Actually, I am not really familiar with Exchange product. Whereas, based on
my research, it seems that your main concern is to migrate from exchange
5.5 to exchange 2k3. Can I assume that you require to convert from Mix mode
to Native Mode in Exchange?
If this is the case, I would like to suggest you refer to the following
article:

If you have any other concerns related to exchange migration. Please post
this question in the microsoft.public.exchange.general newsgroup. That
newsgroup is primarily for issues involving exchange. We recommend posting
appropriately so you will get the most qualified pool of respondents, and
so other partners who regularly read the newsgroups can either share their
knowledge or learn from your interaction with us.
Thanks & Regards,

| Hi,
|
| We are migrating multi master mixed mode windows 2000 and nt4 account
| domains to windows 2003. Additionally each domain has an exchange 5.5
| site which will be migrated to exchange 2003 on the w2k3 domain using
| the swing method.
| Currently we have an active directory forest setup on windows 2003.
| Several of the windows 2000 domains are setup as child domains of the
| w2k3 AD. The rest of the domains are NT4.
| Each windows 2000 domain is trusted to the w2k3 domain with a child
| trust [transitive]. The NT4 domains are trusted with an external trust
| [non transitive].
| We will be consolidating each multi master legacy account domain to the
| w2k3 forest active directory.
| Currently, DNS, WINS and one of the DHCP pools are run on the w2k3 ad
| domain. The w2k domains are dns sub domains of the w2k3 dns domain.
| Active directory connector will be installed in the w2k3 AD
| forest\domain on a domain controller with global catalog service.
| Therefore the w2k3 active directory domain must be in native mode.
| Hence the following question.
|
| Can we elevate the w2k3 ad domain to native mode, without impacting the
| downstream w2k and nt4 domains?
|
| Thanks,
| Thomas
