RE: Migrating NT Server 4.0 to W2K3 Server

Hello,

Thanks for your post.

I understand you want to perform migrate from WinNT to Win2k3 domain.
However, I am still a little unclear with the following question: by using
what method to let live network communicate with dedicated network?

According to your current concerns, I would like give my understanding on
them separately:

Q1: My main concern is that the W2K3 server will start assigning IPs via
DHCP to my NT4 and XP Pro workstations. Are there any issues with this
because basically I'd be having 2 DHCP servers (via NT4 and W2K3) dishing
out IP addresses to my current clients.

A1: If eventually you will remove NT domain, you can move DHCP database to
win2k3 domain and then use win2k3 dhcp to assign the ip address for all
clients and it won't cause DHCP confusion. Please refer to the following
article about how to move DHCP:

How to move a DHCP database from a computer that is running Windows NT
Server 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows Server 2003 to a computer that is
running Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;325473

I have searched and found more information about DHCP, please refer to:
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/technologies/dhcp/default.mspx

For further details about DHCP, I suggest that you post the question in
microsoft.public.windows.server.networking newsgroup to get the most
efficient and professional support on it.

Q2: And what happens when I transfer back the W2K3 server back to its own
dedicated network segment and certain clients having IPs assigned from the
W2K3 server?

Do you mean the new network go internet through dedicated line? After
transferring back the Win2k3 server back to its own dedicated network, how
do the clients communicate with the Win2k3 server? Through what method?

A2: Based on my experience, the result of migration won't be affected by
using what method to connect Internet. Therefore, if the clients can
contact to DHCP server after you transfer the Win2k3 server back to
dedicated network, it won't affect the Win2k3 server to assign IPs to these
clients.

Finally, I would give you some references about migration from Win NT to
Win 2k3:

First, I would like let you know the Recommended Migration Order and it is
listed below for your reference:
1. Domain Global Group
2. Domain Local Group
3. User migration
4. Computer migration
