RE: from 2000 to 2003 but not upgrade

Hi Chet,

Thanks for your post.

I understand you want to create a new domain with the same domain name. If
I have misunderstood, please feel free to let me know.

>From your description, I assume you want to migrate from 2K to 2K3 by using
ADMT instead of the in-place upgrade. However, you need to use different
domain name from original name. If you want to keep the same domain name,
you need migrate twice.

For more reference about how to migrate from 2K to 2K3 by using ADMT,
please refer to the following articles:

326480 How to Use Active Directory Migration Tool Version 2 to Migrate from
Windows 2000 to Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=326480

If you want to migrate domain and keep the same domain name, there are
three methods you can use to achieve your goal:

Method 1: Rename 2k domain name
==============================
Before you take any action to the new server, rename the 2k domain first,
please refer to the following:

How to Rename a Windows 2000 Domain Controller
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;296592

Next, use the migration process to migrate user accounts etc.

Method 2: Rename Windows 2k3 domain name
=================================
1. Install win2k3 on the new server.
2. Promote it to DC.
3. Use the migration process to migrate user accounts etc..
4. Install Exchange 2k3.
5. Migrate Exchange information.

NOTE: Don't install Exchange 2k3 before you change the domain name.

Method 3: Add a new server as a intermittent server
====================
If you have another new server, you use migration process twice. It goes
like this:
NOTE: I assume the original domain name is ABC
1. Install Windows 2k3 on a server name
2. Promote it to DC named EFG.com
3. Use migration process to migrate info from ABC to EFG.com
4. Take all 2k DC offline
5. Install Win2k3 on the Compaq machine
6. Promote it to DC called ABC.com
7. Use migration process to migrate info from EFG.com to ABC.com

Meanwhile, you mentioned that you want to keep the original user profiles,
ADMT can also help you to achieve the goal.

ADMT - the Active Directory Migration tool, has the ability to "translate"
account security information. When using this method, we recommend to use
Replace mode instead of the add mode in ADMT. The following link has
addressed the details:

Remigrating User Accounts and Workstations in Batches

guide/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/all/de

After migration, you can successfully transfer desktop, email, MS Office,
and internet settings. However, some other programs applications cannot be
transferred well because it depends on how the application developed, for
example, MS office can successfully used after migration; however some
applications might not work if it is installed on a specific user instead
of for all user.

HTH!

Thanks & Regards
