Hi Bill,

The reason I suggest you demote the win2k and rename it is because the name
conflict.

For example, win2k server is called ABC and you plan to allow the new
win2k3 also called ABC so that the upgrade process is transparent to the
clients. You need to demote the win2k server first and then rename it to
DEF; you are unable to rename a DC based on win2k system. After that, you
then can rename win2k3 server to ABC.

In addition, the demote process will trigger the information replication
from win2k to win2k3 DC, we can make sure there is nothing lost during this
upgrade process.

If you plan to use the win2k to be an addition DC in the domain for
redundancy reason, then the following step is to promote win2k (now called
DEF) to be an addition DC of win2k3 server (now called ABC). During the
promotion process, all AD information will be replicated from win2k3 to
win2k. When win2k3 is down, win2k will do the authencation job for the
clients.

Further questions, let us get in touch!

Rebecca Chen
