Under ordinary circumstances you should not move to Native mode while a NT
BDC is still in the domain. But since you will need the BDC online in the
native mode domain for a finite amount of time, and then you will get rid of
it, you might be able to get away with it.

It will still think it is a BDC in the domain. It will not replicate with
your existing DC or become a member server. If you have passwords set to
expire on the domain when your users change their passwords, the "BDC" will
not get the new passwords replicated to it. If I recall right you can't go
into the BDC and set a new password for the user because it will need a to
connect to the PDC.

If you can complete what you need to do to get the Exchange 2000 up and
running in a day or two and if there are no password changes or new users
added during those couple of days, you *may* be OK moving to native mode.

Just remember that *anything* that happens that causes replication between
the DCs, once you switch to native mode the BDC will be left out of the
replication. If users change passwords while the exchange BDC is online,
expect them to start getting locked out of Exchange.

*If* you can do this when the network is "quiet" (weekend, three day
weekend) and you can complete it before it becomes "active" (Monday, work
weeks) you *may* be OK making the switch.
